Many family’s who visit Dovedale never wander further than the stepping stones.  This short but strenuous walk is for members of the family who have itchy feet and are not content to just picnic by the Dove.

Thorpe Cloud rises straight up from the River Dove at Dovedale and reaches a height of 942ft. Its distinctive conical shape viewed from Dovedale gives the hill a mountainous feel. Little Switzerland is the name often given to this section of Dovdale and you can understand why. Dovedale was one of the locations used in the filming of the 2010 film Robin Hood staring Russell Crowe including scenes with Thorpe Cloud in the background.

Thorpe Cloud and Dovedale Walk Directions

The path up to the summit of Thorpe Cloud starts just beyond the stepping stones near Lin Dale. The path climbs over rocky steps before reaching a more defined path above Lin Dale. As height is gained the views open up north along the River Dove and west over Bunster Hill. More rocky steps take you to the small summit ridge. The views from here are impressive, to the north St Peter’s church at Alstonefield can be seen. To the west the Izaak Walton Hotel and Ilam Hall.

Descend the ridge to the left (south-east) on a well-worn path down towards the boundary wall. Here turn right back to Dovedale car park or left through Lin Dale back to the stepping stones.
