This exhilarating Peak District walk starts at Curbar Gap and traverses Curbar and Froggatt Edge. There are over 200 rock-climbing routes on Curbar Edge some with names like ‘Profit of Doom Buttress’, which gives the non-climber an inkling into their difficulty. Marvel at the rock climbers as they hang onto the gritstone with just their fingertips. Later in the walk we arrive at the unmistakable bulk of Froggatt Pinnacle before descending through Haywood down to the River Derwent.

The walk heads back along the beautiful Derwent valley and through the outskirts of Froggatt passing attractive riverside cottages before coming to the village of Calver. The large seven-storey mill at Calver was in the 1970’s used in the filming of the television series “Colditz”, it has now been converted to luxury apartments.

Curbar Edge and Froggatt Edge Walk Directions

Parking is available at Curbar Gap and on a lay-by just outside Curbar. For the best views stick to the edge of the ridge, (children will need to be supervised as there are steep drops along the walk), or you may follow the broader path set back from the edge.

From the lay-by take the path that leads diagonally up to Curbar Gap, follow the footpath on the left to gain access to the edge.   Follow the path along the top of the edge for 2.25 miles before reaching the A625, here turn right crossing the road, and left through a gate into Haywood. Follow the path crossing a stream and up towards the car park here fork left down to a gate.

Go through the gate and continue down to another fork in the path, here turn left and continue down through the wood. Soon a stream comes in from the left continue down the path keeping the stream on your left. Go through a gate and onto a track follow this into Grindleford.  Turn left along the main road and left just before the river bridge onto a footpath across pasture. Follow this path into Horse Hay Coppice and on through Froggatt Wood until reaching the village of Froggatt.

Follow the road to Froggatt Bridge keeping left down a lane, stone steps lead right over a wall and down to the River Derwent. Follow the path along the river to another bridge, here go up the steps and cross the road and back down to the path along the river. Continue alongside the river passing a weir and mill ponds at The Goit until reaching a lane. Turn right along the lane passing the restored Calver Mill, the mill was used in the filming of the television series “Colditz” in the 1970’s. Thirsty walkers may take refreshment here in the nearby Bridge Inn before turning left up the steep hill into Curbar. If you have parked at Curbar Gap continue up the hill and bear right across fields back to the car park.
